Recruiter skimming a resume

Recruiters skim; they don't read. Understanding the skim — what it lands on, what it skips — tells you exactly where to put your strongest material.

The Ten-Second Read

The first pass at your resume is often under ten seconds. During it the recruiter is deciding one thing: does this candidate roughly match? Only the zone they actually read determines that decision — everything else is wasted if those lines don't land.

What They Read First

In order:

  1. Header — name, title, location, contact.
  2. Current role — title, company, dates.
  3. Summary — a sentence or two about level and focus.
  4. Recent bullets — the first 1–2 lines of your current job.
  5. Education — glance for level and institution.

That's the skim zone. Build it so it answers the match question on its own.

What They Skip

  • Third and fourth bullets of older roles.
  • Long paragraphs of responsibilities.
  • Interest and hobby lists.
  • Courses taken years ago.
  • Everything below the page-one fold in a two-page resume.

The flip side: content you spend hours perfecting but place outside the skim zone is effectively invisible — the argument of the detail balance guide.

Designing for the Skim

Make the skim zone do the selling: a header with your target title, a two-three line summary naming level and skill, and role titles that state seniority plainly. Whitespace and section order direct the eye.

Where the Skim Moves Next

If the first pass passes, the recruiter reads the top role in full — bullets, numbers, scope. That's the moment your experience section gets its real read. Page one earns it; page two, if any, supports it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do recruiters look at a resume?

The first pass is often under 10 seconds. Design for that: strong header, tight summary, and role titles that state your level immediately.

What in the resume is skimmed first?

Name and contact, current title, company, dates, and the summary. Anything important has to appear in those zones or it won't be seen.

What gets skipped completely?

Long paragraphs of responsibilities, irrelevant coursework, hobby catalogs, and anything below the fold on page two. If it matters, put it on page one.
