Software Engineer Resume Example & Writing Guide

A software engineer resume is read twice: once by an applicant tracking system scanning for stack keywords, and once by an engineer skimming for scope and impact. This example shows how to satisfy both in one page — a tight summary, quantified achievement bullets, and a skills block that mirrors the job description without keyword stuffing.

Recommended template: ATS Professional or Modern Sidebar

Software Engineer resume summary example

Backend engineer with 5 years building high-traffic Node.js and Go services. Cut median API latency 240ms to 70ms across a platform serving 3M monthly users, and led the migration of 40+ endpoints to a typed GraphQL gateway.

Example achievement bullet points

  • Rebuilt the payments retry pipeline in Go, recovering ~$180K in previously failed transactions per quarter
  • Reduced CI runtime from 22 to 6 minutes by parallelising the test suite and caching dependency layers
  • Designed the event schema behind the notifications service now used by four product teams
  • Mentored two junior engineers through their first on-call rotation; both moved to mid-level within a year

Skills to list

  • Languages: TypeScript, Go, Python, SQL
  • Backend: Node.js, PostgreSQL, Redis, gRPC, REST, GraphQL
  • Infrastructure: Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform, GitHub Actions
  • Practices: TDD, code review, observability, incident response

What recruiters look for in a software engineer resume

Hiring managers scan for three things in the first ten seconds: the stack you actually shipped with, the scale you operated at, and whether you owned outcomes or just tickets. Everything else is supporting evidence.

Put your strongest technical achievement in the summary, not buried in the third bullet of your second job. If your best work is open source or a side project, give it a real section rather than a link at the bottom.

  • Concrete stack keywords that match the job posting — ATS filters on exact terms like 'Kubernetes', not 'container orchestration'
  • Numbers attached to engineering outcomes: latency, uptime, cost, throughput, build time, defect rate
  • Scope signals: team size, user count, request volume, services owned
  • Evidence of collaboration — design docs, code review, mentoring, cross-team work

How to structure the resume

For engineers with two or more years of experience, lead with work history. Students and career switchers should lead with projects, then education, then a short work section — the projects are the evidence.

  • Header: name, title, city, email, phone, GitHub, LinkedIn, portfolio
  • Summary: 2–3 lines, stack plus your single best measurable result
  • Skills: grouped by category so both humans and parsers can read it
  • Experience: 3–5 achievement bullets per role, most recent first
  • Projects: 2–3 with a one-line problem statement and the tech used
  • Education and certifications: degree, institution, year

Common mistakes on engineering resumes

The most damaging mistake is listing responsibilities instead of results. 'Responsible for maintaining the API' tells a reader nothing; 'cut API error rate from 2.1% to 0.3% by adding request validation' tells them everything.

The second is a skills section with thirty items rated with progress bars. Rated bars are unverifiable and applicant tracking systems cannot read them. List the technologies plainly and let the experience bullets prove depth.

  • Avoid two-column layouts with graphics if you are applying to large enterprises — use the ATS Professional template instead
  • Do not include every technology you have ever touched; keep the list to what you would be happy to be interviewed on
  • Skip the photo for US, UK, Canada and Australia applications
  • Keep it to one page under ten years of experience, two pages beyond that

Frequently asked questions

How long should a software engineer resume be?
One page for up to about ten years of experience. Beyond that, two pages is acceptable, but the first page still has to carry your strongest work — assume the reader may never reach page two.
Should I include side projects on my engineering resume?
Include them if you are early in your career, changing specialisation, or the project genuinely demonstrates a skill your work history does not. Each project needs a one-line description of the problem it solves and the stack used — a bare GitHub link is not evidence.
Do software engineer resumes need to be ATS friendly?
Yes. Most mid-size and large employers parse resumes before a human sees them. Use a single-column layout, standard section headings, real text rather than text inside images, and the exact technology names used in the job posting.
